Rocks from Space Picture of the Day                              January 2, 2009
Inspired by Svend Buhl’s wonderful Sikhote Alin webpage
(http://www.niger-meteorite-recon.de/en/meteoriten_verkauf.htm), covering different stages of in-flight fragmentation, and the resulting different kinds of regmaglyptic relief, I took some photographs of a 216g specimen.

This specimen has never been cleaned. Soil and vegetation remains can be identified by microscope. Clearly visible at (especially) the backside, is the octahedral structure of this coarsest octahedrite, that has not yet been smoothened out by ablation.
